25 Best Places to Get Published Online
Find out which online publications offer the best deals for
new and established writers.
Katie Struckel Brogan
Last year the dot-com world imploded, causing some online venues
to suspend publication, accept fewer submissions and decrease pay
rates. However, many online publications survived the shift and
adjusted their focus.
"People need to realize that the Internet is still in its infancy
and experiencing growing pains," says Ken J. Davies, publisher of
Millennium Shift e-journal.
"At the peak of dot-com mania, we were receiving up to 150
submissions per week," says Tag Goulet, CEO of Fabjob.com. "People
were rushing to the new frontier of publishing thinking they could
make a fortune selling their writing online."
Goulet says the number of submissions Fabjob.com now receives is
half as many as those received during the dot-com boom. "I think the
dot-com crash made people realize that Web sites couldn't throw a
lot of money at content that wasn't generating revenue."
Goulet says there will be two types of survivors—publications
that "have a steady source of revenue" and those that "are a labor
of love for their creators."
Robert Marcom, publisher of Net Author's E2K, agrees. "The
Internet will not disappoint those with patience and the vision to
perceive that this is a unique medium requiring a fresh, flexible
and innovative approach."
This year's listing includes a variety of online publications
providing writers with many opportunities to get published. While
many of the publications pay well, others do not.
"We know the work we publish is often worth more than the $10
honorarium we can afford to pay, but we justify the amount by the
fact that we accept no advertisement and we provide all services
free of charge," Marcom says.
We included markets that paid an honorarium, a flat fee or no fee
for three reasons:
1. The economy. With the downturn in the dot-com
world, all facets of the economy were impacted, including online
publications. Therefore, some publications may not have the
resources to pay writers.
2. Opportunities for new writers. Many writers are
looking to get published. For some, a byline is sufficient payment;
for others, keeping the rights to their work is important.
Angela Hoy, publisher of WritersWeekly.com, says rights are very
important for writers to consider when submitting to online
publications. "I don't understand why most dot-coms are so greedy
about rights. I think it is grossly unfair to writers when
publications buy more rights than they need or than they currently
plan to use."
3. Other perks aside from money. Some writers just
want the opportunity to edit their work and get a byline or bio
note. Many of the publications listed may not offer money, but are
very generous with rights, bylines, kill fees, etc.
Each market listed includes the publication, Web site,
submissions e-mail, submission format, contact name, the type of
content used and the appropriate word counts, pay rate, time of
payment, rights purchased, content usage and guidelines. It is
important you visit each publication's Web site before submitting.
Rankings that have more than one publication listed by them
indicate a tie, and the sites are then listed in alphabetical order.
